Assignment:

From our readings and videos this week, we get a fuller picture of how the adolescent brain is developing and the impact that has on the adolescent's development overall but also on how those who are closest to that adolescent (i.e., parents; coaches; teachers; etc.) can potentially use that information to guide, support and teach adolescents.

Review the video "Mysterious Workings of the Adolescent Brain." In this video, Sarah-Jayne Blakemore talks about the Prefrontal Cortex and the Limbic System. Discuss these two areas in relation to what their functions are in the brain and also what is happening in these two areas of the adolescent brain. How is this different from the adult brain?

  • How does knowing this information about the adolescent brain, help us to understand adolescent behavior? Discuss what the implications of this research are for understanding adolescents. Does this research make sense in light of your own adolescent behavior or adolescents in general? Explain.
  • Through research, like Ms Blakemore's, we now understand that the brain is adaptable and malleable through adolescence and beyond. What does this mean for the adolescent and for those who interact with the adolescent, whether socially or educationally? How can parents, teachers and other adults in the adolescent's life seize this opportunity to help the adolescent?
  • Also watch again the following short video by Dan Siegel called the Myths of the Adolescent Brain. Share your thoughts about this video..

Requirements

Be sure to cite all sources used when researching this topic, including the two required videos. Your response should be 500 words and include references.
