Assignment:
1. Analyse the client scenario provided by examining relevant social determinants of health and their influence on the central character/s.
This instruction informs you that by identifying and explaining the social determinants that are influencing the health of the people in the case study, you are analysing the situation. Note that if you are discussing a theoretical concept, such as the social determinants of health, you will first need to explain or define this concept.
2. Consider how these social determinants may act as potential enablers or barriers to health equity.
This instruction requires you to explain the concept of health equity, before you can discuss what might aid or inhibit the achievement of this for the character in this case study.
3. Briefly explain the function of the Ottawa Charter.
This instruction is specific: explain the purpose or function of the Ottawa Charter. Consider how it is still used today by people undertaking health promotion. It is not necessary to discuss the history of the development of the Charter.
4. Select 1 of the 5 action areas (operational strategies) from the Ottawa Charter and provide an example (action/intervention/activity) of how using this could mitigate the influence of 1 of the identified social determinants of health to promote greater health equity.
This instruction identifies several component that need to be incorporated in your answer. First, identify and explain the 5 action areas (organisational strategies) outlined in the Ottawa Charter. Second, you need to demonstrate, by providing an description of a health promotion activity/action/intervention, how 1 of the organisational strategies from the Ottawa Charter could be used to minimise or overcome the negative influence of 1 social determinant in the case study which is causing a barrier to health equity. Finally you need to explain (justify) how the health promotion example you have described works to minimise or overcome the negative influence of 1 social determinant.
Assessment criteria 1: Review the relevant social determinants of health
To achieve this criterion, you would need to address the following components:
- Explain what is meant by the social determinants of health.
- Identify potential social determinants influencing the health of the character in the case study.
- Discuss why these social determinants are influencing the health of the character in the case study.
Assessment criteria 2: Examine potential enablers or barriers to health equity
To achieve this criterion, you would need to address the following components:
- Explain what is meant by health equity.
- Explain what is meant by barriers and enablers.
- Identify potential barriers and enablers relating to achieving health equity for the character in the case study and explain why these exist.
Assessment criteria 3: Apply an appropriate health promotion strategy that could be used to address one of the social determinants identified to promote greater health equity
To achieve this criterion, you would need to address the following components:
- Provide an explanation of the function or purpose of the Ottawa Charter.
- Identify and explain the 5 action areas (organisational strategies) outlined in the Ottawa Charter.
- Describe an example of a health promotion response using 1 action area (organisational strategy) from the Ottawa Charter to 1 social determinant negatively impacting a character in the case study.
- Explain how this health promotion response acts to improve health equity.
Please note that this criterion is worth twice as many marks as any other section, so spend twice as much effort on this component of your essay.
