Assignment:

Over the years, the call for changing or abolishing the Electoral College has grown. Most people object to the fact that sometimes the person who receives the popular vote can lose the Electoral College. However if we were to change the Electoral College, would that eliminate the protections to our government that Hamilton envisioned.

Below are three plans for reforming the Electoral College. Review each plan and respond to the questions.

National Popular Vote Interstate Compact

California National Reform Act (2012)

Washington Electoral College Reform Measure, Initiative 1380 (2015)

Select one option that you believe would have the greatest chance of passing. Construct an argument that you would present to a person who opposes the change. Your answer should go beyond the fact that sometimes the candidate who receives a majority of the popular vote fails to win the Electoral College vote. Include commentary and two pieces of evidence, including one from one of the following:

  • Federalist 68
  • Federalist 51
  • Brutus I
