Select one model of change that is most applicable to a community or neighborhood in your city or a city of your choice. You will u se your selection to complete the assessment.
Conduct research to determine how your selected model can explain recent or current changes in your chosen community or neighborhood.
Research specific demographic or economic data relevant to your selected community or neighborhood. Navigate to the United States Census Bureau website and select the "Data & Maps" tab to access various datasets for research purposes.
Read the following scenario:
The city council in your community is interested in developing public housing initiatives to improve quality of life for its residents. They are seeking input from helping professionals, such as social workers, to understand how to effectively engage with the community, to communicate their ideas, and to mobilize their support for the initiatives.
Assessment Deliverable
Analysis in which you describe the process of engaging with the client community.
Your analysis will be reviewed by city council representatives, who will use it to develop a community engagement strategy.
For your analysis you should:
Describe your selected community. Include relevant details to explain its strengths, challenges, structure, function, and cultural characteristics.
Describe the neighborhood type (e.g., integral, parochial, diffuse, stepping-stone, transitory, or anomic) that best characterizes community residents. Justify your response with relevant details and/or examples.
Summarize the three models of neighborhood change: invasion-succession model, life cycle model, and political capacity model. Include relevant details to explain:
The strengths and weaknesses of each model
- How each model is applicable to changes in a neighborhood
- Identify the model of change that is most applicable to your selected community.
- Explain how understanding the model can help city council members develop valuable insights and engage effectively with the community.
Include relevant details or examples to support your ideas. Consider the following examples:
- What are some advantages of analyzing your community with this model?
- What are some challenges that can occur if the social worker doesn't understand the community and the model
