Introduction
You are the Clinical Research Coordinator for two different studies. You will need to make sure your patients are eligible to participate in your studies.
Instructions
1. Listed below are two scenarios, including inclusion/exclusion data.
2. Review the medical information and inclusion/exclusion data to determine if the patient is eligible for the study.
3. Use the Case Scenario template and list your determination, along with a brief explanation for your decision.
Scenario 1
OG is a pleasant 37-year-old female smoker. She is a social drinker and consumes about 3 vodka drinks per week. She has no history of major surgeries or any hospitalizations besides the birth of her one daughter.
Medical History: hypertension, hyperthyroidism, depression, and borderline hyperlipidemia.
Current Medications: Atenolol 2mg once per day, Lexapro 20mg once per day, and a daily multi-vitamin.
Current Laboratory Values (collected 2 months prior to your review):
• Fasting blood glucose: 75 mg/dL
• Hemoglobin: 13.5g/dL
• Platelet Count: 300,000 L
• INR: 1.2
• Cholesterol: 300 mg/dL
• Triglycerides: 186 mg/dL
• ALT: 78 IU/L
• AST: 82 IU/L
Scenario 2
EB is an anxious 68-year-old male. He was at a friend's house when his right arm became numb and he began to feel dizzy. He had had a few beers that night and thought his symptoms were from the alcohol, so he went home to sleep it off. The next afternoon (15 hours later), the right arm numbness continued and he had developed a throbbing headache. He drove himself to the nearest emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a mild ischemic stroke (NIH Stroke Scale = 3).
Medical History: hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, smokes cigars, and drinks alcohol occasionally. There is no history of previous strokes or neurological disorders.
Current Medications: Atenolol 20mg once per day. He has not filled his prescriptions for diabetes or cholesterol in two months.
Current Laboratory Values (collected at the time of his emergency room visit):
• Blood glucose: 171 mg/dL
• Hemoglobin - 13.5g/dL
• Platelet Count - 100,000 L
• INR - 1.2
• Cholesterol - 300 mg/dL
• Triglycerides - 186 mg/dL
