Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious problem that can lead to many health consequences and even death. IPV can affect men and women of all ages and can be in many different forms, such as physical, mental, emotional, sexual and financial (Intimate Partner Violence, 2012). The ACOG websites recommends that Obgyns, have a unique opportunity to screen many women for IPV and that they should be screened at regular intervals (Intimate Partner Violence, 2012). Screening and counseling for IPV can be incorporated into every patient visit, including prenatal and postpartum and should include a private and confidential setting, with routine questions and available printed information for the patient to take home (Marques, 2019).

Identify two risk factors for IPV.

Although everyone is at risk for intimate partner violence, some people may be at increased risk. Some groups that are at increased risk for IPV include adolescents, immigrants, women with disabilities and older women (Intimate Partner Violence, 2012).

Describe some clinical signs you may observe in the woman who is experiencing intimate partner violence.

Some clinical signs of IPV include poor health, depression, anxiety, PTST, substance abuse, chronic health complaints, chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues due to stress, difficulty maintaining a job, unsafe sexual behavior, low self-esteem, mistrust of others, statements of shame or guilt, issues with harming self and suicide thoughts or attempts (Marques, 2019). For example, studies show that women are more likely to report issues with anxiety or depression if they are in a violent relationship (Marques, 2019). This is important because all patients especially those reporting such symptoms should be screened for IPV. Need 250 Words.
