Case Studies: Today, I am presented with the case of Jared. A 5-year-old in kindergarten. When the child is frustrated, he becomes very angry, curses, and hits the teachers and other students. Recently he has had 2 occurrences in the classroom where he threw chairs across the room. After the incidences, the child becomes remorseful for his actions. Parents recently had a new baby 4 months ago.
According to DSM-5, the child is 5 years old which makes diagnosing very challenging at a young age. According to the criteria of DSM-5 how can we support this case with an Anxiety Disorder (potentially using subdivisions - social) using the child diagnosis subdivisions? How can the the anxiety and the inability to control his emotions at such a young age due to environmental factors contribute this specific diagnosis?
After further review of the case should we consider Intermittent Explosive Disorder or Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder? These diagnosis cannot be official until the age of 6 and the client meets the appropriate DSM-5 criteria. How do these apply?
Is there enough availability and efficacy of mental health support services in schools, particularly for kids experiencing socio-emotional difficulties?
