Songs tell us a lot about our culture and how people view the world. For this reflection paper, go back and review the information on Sociological Perspectives in Lesson One. There are three main theories - Functional Theory, Conflict Theory, and Symbolic Interactionism. After reviewing this theoretical perspectives think about a song - new or old - that reflects one of these three perspectives.

For example, the song Just The Way You Are can be viewed through the lens of Symbolic Interactionism and how we view ourselves as how we think others see us. Other songs that focus more inequality reflect a conflict theory point of view. Songs that emphasize the value of working together or supporting the value of family and religion are more in line with functional theory. For your reflection paper, write out at least one verse of the lyrics for the song you selected and then, in three hundred to five hundred words, explain which of the three theoretical perspectives your song reflects.
