By combining superfluous tactics that involves secret messages, a hidden tunnel, devices such as a rope ladder, and other elements he has read from his quixotic books, the entire plan becomes a comical romantic farce. Ironically, towards the end of the novel, it is revealed by Tom that Jim's rightful owner had set him free on her will preceding her death. This adds a new element of irony and humor to Twain's novel. "Tom Sawyer had gone and took all that trouble and bother to set a free nigger free!" (Twain 302). Initially, Tom had been suppressing the truth about Jim's freedom throughout the entire ordeal. The opportunity to burlesque Tom's romanticism and infuse humor back into the novel ultimately transpires at the price of Jim's perceived freedom. Alongside Huck, Tom provokes redundant mayhem at Jim's expense just to experience the thrill of adventure.
