Please refer to the chapters we discussed throughout the semester as you analyze the issues involved in your scenario by looking at the self, perceptions, verbal, non-verbal and listening skills, barriers, styles of expressing conflict, methods of conflict resolution, decision-making approaches, power dynamics, and problem-solving approaches. You may refer to gender and/ or cultural challenges. Please make sure to integrate at least five concepts/barriers and five ways to improve communication from any of the above chapters.
- Examine the original source of the message, the content of the message; use of verbal, non-verbal cues and listening styles; channels used to deliver the message; the receiver of the message and how the message was interpreted; type of noise involved; forms of perception checking; transaction and feedback process.
- Outline the context and setting of the conflict; examine the process of communication and what could be done to overcome barriers and improve the communication.
The paper should include a discussion of the scenario and your approach to resolve it as a win-win proposal. Please integrate one theory that can contribute to the understanding of the situation.
Communication Breakdown Scenarios:
1. Your boss wants to meet with you to discuss your Annual Performance Review. You are confident that your boss is aware of all of your contributions and hard work. However, during the meeting you realize that the review does not recognize your contributions and your boss is not satisfied with your performance. Create a scenario between your boss and yourself to analyze the communication during the meeting, describe the breakdown, barriers to effective communication, conflict, and ways to improve the communication (see also chapter 11 and slides).
2. You are working in a company for 3 years and feel that the time has come for a pay raise. You prepare yourself for a meeting with your boss, in which you will discuss the reasons for a raise. However, during the meeting you realize that your boss is reluctant to the idea and from their voice and non-verbal cues you understand that your request may cost you your job. Create a scenario between your boss and yourself to analyze the communication during the meeting, describe the breakdown, barriers to effective communication, conflict, and ways to improve the communication (see also chapter 11 and slides).
3. You live with your spouse/partner for an x amount of years, but feel that things have changed, you receive all sorts of messages from your partner that indicate to you that things are not as they used to be. Create a scenario between you and your spouse/partner to analyze the communication, describe the breakdown, barriers to effective communication, conflict, and ways to improve the communication. See also chapter 11 family relationships.
4. You were selected to work with a team of financial advisors to review the current customer-service policy at a bank. You notice that some of the advisors on the team are in disagreement with the proposed changes in policy. What would you advice your team to do in order to overcome the differences in approach so that you can all achieve the common goal and create a win-win proposal? Create a scenario and analyze the communication during the meeting; describe the breakdown, barriers to effective communication, conflict process, and ways to improve the communication (see chapter 11 and slides).
