A review of the Published Literatures on Effective Recruitment and Retention Strategies of nurses: Right Nurse, Right Place, Right Time.
Main Research question:
What are the Strategies for Effective Recruitment and Retention of Nurses?
The objectives of this research project are to review the published literatures to:
- Identify the factors effecting recruitment and retention in nursing.
- Identify the different types of recruitment and retention polices reported in different countries.
- Identify the barriers and facilitators to effective recruitment and retention practice.
- Describe the characteristics of health establishments that successfully recruit and retain nurses?
Background:
It is well recognised that nursing profession isan important contributors in health care facilities. They are the largest group of health providers in hospitals and their performance is substantially related to the quality of care patients receive, and their eventual health outcomes.
Deficiencies in retention and recruitment have driven the shortage of nursing profession over the last decade. Shortage in nursing practitioners can have detrimental effect on the quality and safety of patient acre. An ageing nursing workforce, less nursing graduates, inadequate working conditions and a changing work/life culture are all major factors (Hayes, et al., 2012).
The globe shortage of nurse has been acknowledge by governments who have responded by implementing a number of policies and strategies to manage nursing workforce shortage (WHO, 2003).
Many research shows that magnet hospitals posses core characteristics in recruiting and retaining nurses and demonstrate low level of turnover and high level of job satisfaction among staff nurses (Joyce & Crookes, 2007).
This research project well explore different policies that show evidence of efficacy of recruiting nurses from different countries and the characteristics of health establishments that successfully recruit and retain nurses. It will do this by undertaking a review of relevant published literatures. The following section will outline the methods and contribution of the research.
