Assignment - Critical Review of Literature on Theories of Play and Learning
Instructions for the assignment: In this assignment you have to go beyond summarising simple facts or ideas presented in a reading or a journal article.
This assignment requires you to review four selected chapters from your prescribed text book and submit a 300 word response for each . The purposes of this assignment are to develop students' in- depth reading and analytical skills and knowledge of theories relating to children's play and learning.
WHAT DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?
A written 300-word review for each reading or a total of 1200-word review for four set readings. The readings to be reviewed are:

- Fleer, M. (2017). Classical and developmental theories of play. In Play in the early years (2nd Ed., pp.111-123). Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press.
Write a review for each chapter using the headings provided in the template. But, submit all four reviews as a single ?le. The reading template will provide details of what to submit for each chapter. There is no need to submit a reference list if you have quoted references only from the text book. But, you must submit a reference list if you referred to literature or books or journal articles outside the text book.

Read the set weekly reading for the Critical Review Assignment. See the Teaching Schedule of this Learning Guide. These readings can be accessed only from your text book . They are not available online. Therefore, you MUST buy the textbook ASAP. Do not buy a second hand copy of this book or the 2013 edition. The prescribed text book is dated 2017, second edition.
Start with skimming each reading and identify its key points and the overall arguments of the author in each reading.
Read the reading/s again, critically, to identify the main ideas, theoretical concepts and the evidence that the author used to support the ideas, concepts, and culturally relevant assumptions.
Draw clearly the implications of the main ideas presented in each reading for promoting children's play, development and learning and/or for families and educators' practices.
Write your review for each reading using the template given below, covering all sub- headings in the template. Write in full sentences in each section. Do not write in bullet points.
Purpose/s: What is the author trying to achieve in this set reading? Is it to persuade readers and/or inform or describe or challenge their ideas and assumptions about children's play/development/learning? Write in full sentences in each section. Do not write in bullet points.
Main or key point/s: What are the key points and ideas of this reading? YOU MUST DISCUSS THESE POINTS USING THE LITERATURE/REFERENCES QUOTED IN THE CHAPTER.
Theoretical perspectives or assumptions: What theory or theories and assumptions relate to the main ideas or key points of this reading?
Conclusions: What are the conclusions of the author in this reading? YOU MUST PRESENT AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS, NOT YOURS'.
Implications: What did you learn from this reading and how would you apply this knowledge into practice? Think about how the various ideas presented in the reading could be used to promote children's play, developments and learning and/or useful for families and educators' practices and provide speci?c example/s. MAKE SURE YOU PRO-VIDE SPECIFIC IMPLICATIONS.

Clear identification of theoretical perspectives and/or assumptions relating to the main idea/s and/or key point/s in each set reading.
Clearly drawn implications for children's play/development/learning and /or for families and educators from each set reading.
Presents work professionally, with clear academic writing and within the 1200-word limit and uses the APA referencing style correctly.
