The Report consist of two Parts: Part-1 & Part-II
Part-I: A Network Infrastructure design for enterprise network: A request for proposal (RFP) to design a new Wired & Wireless Local Area Network LAN and Backbone wide area network (WAN) network design report.
Group formation: In each tutorial please form a group of 3 to 4 students to work on the group assignment. The assignment specifications are in a form of request for proposal (RFP) which is a solicitation, often made through a bidding process, by a company interested in procurement of an installation contract service to potential suppliers to submit a proposal. This group assignment provides an opportunity for you to work in a project as a group member and apply data communications and Computer networking concepts to a practical network design. You will be required to analyze a case study and make networking recommendations based on the RFP requirements. This assignment will also allow you to present your solutions in a formal reporting format. Contributions from individual members of a project group will be described in the formal report. Peer assessment component will be discussed; Forms such as Individual load factor and Group load factor will be used to access individual and group contributions. Such data will be used to individualize student marks in cases of substantially inequitable work put in by members of a given group.
You should supply the following information in response to the request for Proposal (RFP):
Task -a) Project requirements brief can be derived from Objectives and Scope of Work section of the RFP. A requirement brief is usually an itemized list of the client's requirements derived from the RFP.
Task -b) Wired & Wireless LAN design for a typical floor, which includes the following information: -
1. Computer desktop layout plan with network topology for a typical floor level.
2. Switch/Wireless Access Point location on a typical floor, vertical cable paths and lengths between the floors. Switch/Access Point functional specifications. Assume the floor to ceiling height as 3 meters approximately including the false ceiling.
Task -c) Recommendation and justification of the structured cabling selected, Access Point (AP), Switches i.e. distribution layer, building backbone cabling and media type to be used for a typical floor level and for the connection across the road to the existing LAN.
Task -d) List of equipment and the wireless and wired specifications, technical and cabling specifications. Note: Specifications/Technical details should be included in the Appendix.
Task -e) You need to outline design rules for a computer LAN, WLAN&WAN network and describe it in detail. Your description should include:
a. Detailed steps required in the network design process,
b. methods used to form estimates of network performance for each access point taking into account the types of antennae and wireless protocol,
c. An example of a basic sample design showing proposed floor plan, assumptions, justifications and calculations.
d. Assumptions of backbone connectivity using wired/wireless media needs to be reported.
e. Your new design should include IP addressing strategy for both the acquired new buildings
Write a report of maximum 5000 words, not including diagrams and pictures (you can write a good report in around 3000 words).
Part-II: A review of computer networking cable types and characteristics used in Part-I.
You are required to investigate the types of cables used in your design of computer networks in the Part-1 and you are required to do research and collect information on cables and its technology in terms of characteristics, application, use, support, installation and relevant testing tools and deployment tools required for implementing them in network infrastructure. Please focus and write on the following Applied Research tasks:
Task -f) Compile a catalog of at least three cable types together with technical, numerical & characteristics standards of the cables. You should include versions of each basic cable technology for comparison; and the scope should include the network design used in Part-I of your modern LANs & WANs design. i.e. cable technology used in your network design.
Task -g) Describe the examples of all the best application and use of these recommended cableused in your Part-I network infrastructure design and explain why the technical characteristics of that cable make it best suited for those applications in your design.
Task -h) Describe the physical support of these cables and their technologies and network infrastructure installation requirements in Part-I Horizontal and Vertical structured cabling for LAN & WAN and WLAN Network infrastructure.
Task -i) Describe all the relevant hardware tools and testing tools required in the use of each cable type for Part-1 design.
