Determine Fire Protection Compliance of Buildings

This task requires you to determine the fire resistance level (FRL) required for the construction of the buildings from Task 3.1.
You must complete Task 3.1 first before proceeding with this task.

Steps to take:

1. Locate the Fire Protection Compliance form provided for you on the following pages.
The Fire Protection Compliance form will be used to determine the level of fire resistance required for the construction of the buildings in the building plans.
Review the instructions here and in the Fire Protection Compliance form with your supervisor before starting so you can prepare for the tasks.

2. Visit each building to determine the following
i. A building component of your choice in each building.
A building's component must include one of the following:
• Walls
• Columns
• Beams
• Floors
• Roof
• Ceilings
ii. The material the building component you chose is made of
iii. Existing passive fire control measures
iv. Existing active fire protection measures
v. Actual thickness of building's chosen component.
3. Using the Fire Protection Compliance form, identify the following for each building:
i. NCC requirement for passive fire control
ii. One existing passive fire control measure
iii. Legislative requirement for active fire protection
iv. One existing active fire protection measure
v. One building component from each building class. Building components must be one of the following:
• Walls
• Columns
• Beams
• Floors
• Roof
• Ceilings
vi. The material used in the construction of the chosen building component
vii. The required minimum thickness of the material to achieve the following fire resistance levels:
• 60/60/60
• 90/90/90
• 120/120/120
• 180/180/180
• 240/240/240
Thicknesses must be in millimetres and based on the BCA Volume 1.
Some materials will have FRLs with provisions only for structural adequacy (the first number). In this case, document the minimum required thickness for maintaining only structural adequacy.
Some materials will have no minimum required thickness for specific FRLs. In this case, write down N/A.
Some materials will have no minimum required thickness for any FRLs. In this case, write down the alternative specifications recommended by the Building Code of Australia Volume 1.
viii. Actual thickness of building's chosen component.
ix. The overall fire protection compliance of each building based on the requirements you have identified.
x. An explanation of your conclusion regarding the building's fire protection
compliance.

4. Have your supervisor review your completed Fire Protection Compliance form. Your supervisor must also complete and sign the Supervisor Declaration at the end of the form. Their signature must be handwritten.
