Case Study: Manage Discussion Entry
In our scenario, a twenty-eight-year-old female presents with complaints of a ‘fishy' vaginal odor and discharge. She does not report any high-risk sexual activity and no history of STDs. The first question I would ask her would be related to the vaginal discharge. I would ask questions to obtain the color, odor, consistency, amount and frequency of the discharge (Bickley, 2013). I would also ask if she has any other symptoms such as itching, burning or lumps in the area (Bickley, 2013).
The first procedure to be performed to detect appropriate diagnosis would be the scan saline wet mount to detect possible vaginitis from bacterial or Trichinosis (Bickley, 2013).The second test I would perform would be for pH > 4.5 for vaginal secretions (Bickley, 2013).In order to obtain the samples for these laboratory tests, I would perform both an external and internal pelvic exam. I would let the patient know what I am about to do prior to each step. During the internal portion, prior to swabbing for discharge samples I would let her know that she may feel pressure, but that it will not hurt her. Laboratory tests are essential is obtaining the correct diagnosis. The analyzation of the laboratory specimen will allow for proper diagnosis of the causative agent causing discharge.
Seventy five percent of women may have vaginitis at one time in the course of their life (Abdali, Jahed, Amooee, Zarshenas, Tabatabaee & Bekhradi, 2015). Vaginitis can cause a white-gray discharge and a ‘fishy' odor to the discharge (Bickley, 2013).Vaginitis can occur secondary to Candida, Trichomonas or bacterial vaginitis (Abdali et al...2015). Treatment can include Zataria multiflora cream or metronidazole orally.
