Assignment - Device Hardware and OS Research
Device Hardware and OS Research In this assignment you will review and compare a number of devices and operating systems. This task will require you to undertake research. Much of the information you find will come from the Web but preferably this should not be the only source of information you use.
Assignment 2a- Your Hardware Specifications
Requirements and submission: see the Forum for assessment item 2a.
Assignment 2b-- Your OS Specifications
Requirements and submission: see the Forum for assessment item 2b.
Assessment Item 2a: Your Hardware Specifications
Following is an exercise you should complete as part of the assessment of this course:
• For your preferred smartphone or tablet (must be released in last 18 months = 6 quarters), look for the specifications of each hardware component that is present in the device. For components that are not present (e.g. GPS or proximity sensor), state explicitly that it is not present.
You must make sure you choose a device that has not yet been analysed by another student! Hence, it's best to watch this forum and do your analysis as soon as you can.
It is not necessary that you physically own this device; it could just be your dream machine.
• Post your result on this StudyDesk Forum
• List the source of info for each hardware component
• For an example of what is required, see below
Each student must create their own Discussion Topic in this forum. The deadline is 29 August 2014, but we highly recommend that you complete and submit this much earlier.
Comprehensive Example
Here is an example of what were expecting in your submission. Since this features the HTC EVO 3D (released more than 18 months ago), you're not allowed to research the same hardware... Note: we've removed the actual links used in the references, so you need to find your own sources. Make sure you include the links in your own submission!
HTC EVO 3D

Internal Storage: 4GB eMMC
Removable Storage: 8GB microSD (expandable to 32GB)[51
Assessment Item 2b: OS comparison
Following is an exercise you should complete as part of the assessment of this course:
• Describe two significant technical differences between two mobile OSs of your choice.
• Describe one significant commercial or user-experience difference between the same two OSs.
• Be specific about which OSs you are comparing: name/brand plus version. In your combination of the 2 OSs, they must each be of a different name/brand. Name/brands include: iOS, Android, Blackberry OS, webOS, Symbian, Windows Phone 7, and Meamo/MeeGo.
• The combination of the two OSs must be unique per student. For this purpose, we will accept two OSs to be different if their name/brand is the same but their version differs at least by 1 full version number (e.g. Android 1.5 and 2.2 are different OSs; if you are comparing Android
2.2 to iOS 3.1 this will be different from another student comparing Android 4.0 to iOS 4.3)
• The description must be quite detailed, featuring objective facts and/or measures.
• Technical issues include (but are not limited to): multitasking, kernels, security, protection, sandboxing, runtime machines, etc.
• Commercial or user-experience issues include (but are not limited to): proxy support, apps store publishing policies, tethering, wireless authentication protocol supports, etc.
• Post your result on this StudyDesk Forum
• List the source (typically a website) of info for each item
Length: When printed, the bare text in your forum post should be at least 1 page long. Do not exceed two pages!
