Question
Assume you were recently hired by Amazon as a Supervisory Manager in a warehouse / distribution center. You have 15 employees that report to you. You personally report to the Warehouse General Manager, who reports to the District Manager, who reports to a Vice President in the Corporate Office. You'll need to oversee people and the daily operations. Amazon warehouse supervisors in general have a four-part focus on safety, quality, customer experience, and productivity. Amazon is a data and metric driven company. They understand that leadership is used by everyone at all levels of the organization, not just those in formal roles at the top.
- You'll be called to lead. Review all of Amazon's "Leadership Principles" on the following page. Choose the three principles that you feel are most important to being a supervisor and explain your rationale for inclusion of each.
- You are responsible for hiring your team. What skills will you look for in those that you hire and oversee and why?
You need to answer to the demands of your superiors. Assume the company enacts mandatory overtime for your already tired staff. How will you balance keeping the team engaged, productive, safe, and happy?
- Assume you hear some of your teammates discussing the idea of forming a union. How would you react to the situation and who might you report the information to? What ethical issues are at stake?
