All individuals who are involved in operative or other invasive procedures have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for patients. Perioperative team members must be vigilant in safeguarding the sterility of the field and ensuring that the principles and processes of sterile technique are followed and implemented. This is accomplished by: Covering an established sterile field with sterile drapes when there is a delay in beginning the procedure. Moving the gown cuff to cover the sterile personnel's fingers when the circulator is removing sterile gloves. Moving the gown cuff to the wrist to expose the fingers during closed assisted gloving. Taping the perioperative procedure room doors closed as an alternative to monitoring the field.
