1. I think it is important for me to facilitate in groups and teams to make decisions because it will build my self-confidence. Being a group or team facilitator will also allow me to better my active listening skills without giving my opinion or feelings about the situation or task. Being a facilitator will also help me become better at paraphrasing.
2. I love working in groups because the responsibility of completing the task is shared. However I have experienced some challenges in working with a group/ team. Some challenges I have experienced were lack of engagement. Sometimes a member of the group just wasn't engaged so the others and myself had to pick up the slack. Another challenge was time. Trying to coordinate a time when everyone is available to complete or work on the task can be difficult. Even with using Google, everyone may not be available at the same time. The hardest challenge I have had to deal with is someone not completing their share of work at all and not meeting the deadlines that were set. This was the hardest challenge to deal with because when this occurred, I had to share of work and had to complete the other group member work as well. This was very frustrating because the other group member received credit for work they did not complete. In these three challenges I think a facilitator could have help. In the first challenge the facilitator could have assured that everyone in the group was able to share their ideas. The facilitator would have also been able to verify the task of each individual in the group by paraphrasing. In the second challenge the facilitator could have set the time and date for everyone to meet up in person or online. For the last challenge the facilitator would have been able to see that the other group member did not complete the required work and could have maybe got another member to join the group. The facilitator could have also advised me that I would have to the project on my own because the other group member had to drop out of the group.
3. The participatory values are: everyone participates, people give each other room to think, opposing viewpoints are allowed, everyone pays attention, and the decision still reflects a wide range of perspectives. Participatory values are important because everyone feels heard, appreciated and valued for the input on the decision that needs to be made. Participatory values ensure things are done the right way and everyone feels a sense of responsibility.
4. I would describe the process of consensus decision-making as the group is collectively looking at the bigger picture and serving a purpose. Consensus is when everyone gives their input, everyone's input is considered and the group does what best for everyone.
