Assignment: Responsibilities to Stakeholders

Introduction: You need to read and follow the directions!
The overarching purpose of this assignment is to develop a solid foundation of business research and writing skills that will serve you well in your academic and work careers. Specifically, you will:

- Gain experience in using the resources of Seneca Libraries
- Craft a professional looking business report with MLA citing of sources leveraging the References and Formatting functions of Microsoft Word
- Apply the concepts from Chapter 2 of Business for BAM101, OER 2019 (Wade), concepts that you will use in your careers
- Familiarize yourself with two of the greatest and very different entrepreneurial business leaders of our times

Are You Coachable?
While the above may seem daunting, this document provides step by step instructions and a great many tips to support your progress.

I agree with Laura Di Franco, that "being coachable means you're open to listening to feedback, able to receive constructive criticism without taking it personally, willing to take a look at your own performance in order to improve it." (Franco)

If you follow the instructions in this document and the tips and feedback to students of previous semesters in the appendices, you will do very well.

Instructions
1. The main content of your report will be:

• Situation Description and Initial Judgement
• Business Leader Profile on Elon Musk
• Business Leader Profile on Warren Buffett
• Responsibilities to Stakeholders
• Reflection

2. Additionally, you will have a Title Page, Table of Contents Page, and a Bibliography page, for a total of nine pages. (20 marks)

3. Watch the video "Musk vs. Buffett, a Solar War in the Desert Heats Up" (Withers)
4. Summarize the video story and identify the main issue in one or two paragraphs.

5. In another paragraph, briefly describe whose side you would take.3 Your decision is to be based on your initial feelings and personal values.
6. Complete the Seneca Libraries tutorial
Elon Musk
7. Using at least five quality sources,4 research and develop a profile on Elon Musk which could include:

• Background, education and career
• Achievements (i.e. What makes him famous?)
• Activities outside of work (Causes/ Philanthropy/ Interests)
• Etc.

Business Leader Profile on Warren Buffet (one page, ~20% weight)
8. Similarly, using at least five quality sources, research and develop a profile on Warren Buffett which could include:

• Background, education and career
• Achievements (What makes him famous?)
• Activities outside of work (Causes/ Philanthropy/ Interests)
• Etc.

Responsibilities to Stakeholders (one to two pages, ~20% weight)
9. Use the concepts of "Justice", "Individual Rights" (Wade 42-43) and "Responsibilities to Stakeholders" (Wade 50-54) from the textbook's Chapter 2 Business Ethics to assess the situation and determine "which billionaire will triumph" (Withers ~ 7:34).

• Remember, pretend you are the Nevada Public Utility Commission (NPUC)
• I will be looking for subheadings and / or paragraphs discussing:
• Investors
• Customers
• Communities
• Environment
• Employees

10. Research what happened in the real world. What did NPUC decide to do? This means researching what happened since the video was released. Finish with a paragraph about whether the "Justice", "Individual Rights" and "Responsibilities to Stakeholders" were useful in predicting the outcome and why (or why not).

- I will be looking for subheadings and / or paragraphs discussing
- NPUC Decision
- Nevada Now
- Conclusion

Reflection (half page, ~10% weight)
11. What did you learn from this assignment? Did you gain any insights about ethics? Did you develop any skills?

Works Cited (~ 10% weight)
12. Use Microsoft Word's Reference feature to manage your in-body citations and create our Works Cited section. There should be at least 12 listings, i.e. a minimum of five each for Musk and Buffet, one for what really happened, and the textbook.

Your report will be assessed as to the degree to which you demonstrate that you conducted research using high quality resources from Seneca Libraries and other sources and have understood and applied the selected concepts on Business Ethics and Responsibilities to Stakeholders. You will also be graded as to formatting professionalism. See the section Document Formatting Professionalism and the appendix Tips on Document Professionalism.

You may have noticed in the instructions that I used approximate weights of each section of the report, and not specific marks. This is because for this assignment, we use what's called a "Single Point Rubric". (Gonzalez)

Learning how to create professional looking documents using the built-in features of Microsoft Office will dramatically increase your productivity and reduce your stress throughout your academic and professional careers. Hence, I am going to be very tough on you if you do not follow these document formatting guidelines. In other words, "you may hate me now, but you'll thank me later".

1. Start with a Microsoft Word template that is professional and tweak it as necessary. Find templates within Microsoft Office or on-line

2. Once you've chosen your base Microsoft Word template, create a blank document with a Title Page, a Table of Contents page, pages for all the Headings and Subheadings from the previous section, appendices, and Works Cited.

3. File Name: Save your file with a name in the format Course Name of Assignment (Student Name). e.g. BAM101 Leadership and Ethics Assignment (Ashley Smith)

4. Create a single-spaced document (i.e. like this one). To me, double-spaced looks academic and single-spaced more business-like

5. This document is based on one of the standard Microsoft Word templates, but I changed the spacing to single-spaced

6. Be sure to include the following structural elements right from the start using Word's built-in functionality:

a. Title Page
b. Table of Contents
- It is essential that you learn to use the Headings function as I have in this document to make this easy. Notice how my use of Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on facilitate easy insertion and updating of the TOC (Table of Contents)
- Note that in the TOC I show three levels
