The design team will be planning all aspects of the knowledge management approach including scoping, knowledge mapping, design of knowledge sharing processes, creation of roles and responsibilities for the approach, measures, analysis and use of IT capabilities and tools. They will use a standard project management guide to support efforts.

DESIGN TEAM LEADER

The leader is usually the initiator or advocate for the KM approach. This is an individual with a passion for a topic or specialty area and wants to see it developed further. His/her goal usually is to see the newly acquired knowledge being used to the advantage of the organization.

IT SPECIALIST
Roles and Responsibilities
IT will create plans for on-going tool support and evolution. Key elements of the plan include a description of how current IT infrastructure and tools fit into the long-range plans and strategy for KM. Ongoing activities include making enhancements to existing IT tools and determining if other tools are needed over time . IT will work with the KM core team and leader to understand and support requirements and information for each KM business case, looking for synergies and leverage existing tools.
Resource Commitment
25 - 30% for months 1- 7
CONSULTANT/FACILITATOR (EXTERNAL)
Roles and Responsibilities
A facilitator will be needed to design and launch the KM approach. This person should have knowledge and experience in developing and embedding KM approaches. A leader will also need to be established to ensure the KM approach is developed according to best practices and see that the newly acquired knowledge is being used to the advantage of the organization. The facilitator can remain with the approach as long as needed to ensure that internal capabilities are being built, which will foster the legacy of the community.

30% - 50% for months 1 - 3
10% - 25% for months 4 – 7
KM ADVISORY GROUP
Roles and Responsibilities
The KM core team will engage and work with a group of senior leaders, key stakeholders, and process owners to provide on-going advice and guidance for KM efforts. This group will be called the KM advisory group. The KM core team will keep the advisory group informed of the on-going efforts focused on KM projects and update on new capabilities, successes, and lessons learned. The KM advisory group will provide thought leadership and decision-making for setting priorities for KM.
Resource Commitment
5% for months 1 - 12
