Resolving organizational conflict (pg. 225)
Imagine that you are a consultant who was asked to assist the top management team of a large, multi-national organization that manufactures and distributes retail sports equipment. You are working with them to facilitate their strategic planning meeting to design a strategy for the next fiscal year. The budget decisions for the next year are being made in the meeting and the CEO has asked you to attend.
Prior to the meeting, the CEO and CFO have made it clear to all the officers who will be attending that resources will be very tight for the upcoming fiscal year. As a result, they will only fund one new initiative. You already know from your interviews of the top executives that two competing initiatives are going to be recommended by two different departments.
The Vice President of Talent and Development is going to recommend a training initiative. Recent organizational research has shown that certain categories of people, such as women and minorities, are very underrepresented in the organization. As a result, the HR department wants $480,000 for a new management training program that will focus on training managers about how to recruit a diverse applicant pool. The program positively impacts the organization’s ability to compete for some federal contracts.
The Vice President of Sales and Marketing is going to recommend a new marketing campaign. Recently, a competitor was very successful at using a prosocial advertisement to improve their image. The marketing department would like $510,000 for a marketing campaign to increase and highlight the very high United Way contributions within the organization to improve overall image and regain some lost marketing share.
Both departments have defined how they will measure the outcomes to determine the impact of their initiatives, yet you know that it is unclear whether either will in fact succeed. You expect a fairly significant conflict between the leaders of the two departments. Given the content of this book, what steps would you recommend to help minimize and resolve this conflict?
In a detailed post, outline the steps you would recommend to help minimize and resolve the conflict presented.
