Question

I think family conflict is a confounding factor that should be considered in researching the effectiveness of treatments. In particular, parent conflict with adolescents is known to be associated with the development and maintenance of adolescent depression (Rognli et al., 2020). For this reason, attachment-based family therapies have been seen as helpful in treating depression, in particular when there is conflict with the mother (Rognli et al., 2020).

In a grounded theory design, qualitative data can be taken from non-participant observations, such as parents in this case (Richards and Morse, 2013). Therefore interviewing the parents may provide useful data on the family dynamic/conflict and if there are changes to the relationship when the adolescent is receiving CBT; or if ongoing conflict is a factor that impacts the effectiveness of this treatment. I would be interested in a narrative of the relationship chronologically from prior to the diagnosis/symptoms of depression to the current time to further explore the patterns that had occurred and to see if any themes emerged once CBT was started. If you were to interview parents with this research design and study question in mind, what questions would you ask? Trauma in children and adolescents is unique and has been effectively treated with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
