Paper - persuasive
For the past few weeks, you have been researching a topic and finding a thesis for a persuasive paper. Now it's time to sit and write it!
What do I mean by the phrase ‘persuasive paper?'
It is not purely informative. People will not all agree with your thesis and part of your job as the author will be persuading them that your take on the issue is at least worth a second look. To do this it means that, in part, you will mention some of the reasons people might be against your view and show that your take on the issue can overcome that.
Would you like to see an example?
Taking my example topic of the importance of urban gardens for school children, we can see that one issue against it is the expense. I might show how while there is an expense, the benefits of this garden outweigh this.
Showing?
By showing I mean using the sources I have gathered (or finding others) and sharing examples from them.
What are the paper requirements?
The paper should be between 1000 and 1450 words. (About 4 pages) This does not include your works cited page, your cover sheet/title page, and so on. It only includes the essay itself.
We've been researching sources. What can you say about that?
You will need at least 4 sources for use in your paper. At least 2 must be peer-reviewed journals, studies, and so on. The other 2 may be other sorts of sources including, but not limited to, newspaper or magazine articles, on-line sources (not counting Wikipedia, Pro-Con or other gathering of information sites.) Only sources you cite go on the works cited page.
Format?
We are using MLA style layout, documentation, and works cited page format. Don't forget that your textbook as well as the provided links to handouts show you how to do this. It is important to remember that even if it is a GaleOneFile source you need to include the name of the author and journal the source initially comes from.
