Part 1: Researching and Preparing to Coach
Using your interview notes from the Topic 2 Clinical Field Experience A assignment, research and prepare support resources to provide the mentee from Clinical Field Experience A so they can confidently integrate three educational technology tools/media as part of their upcoming unit. Be prepared to utilize the digital concept map you created in the Topic 1 and 2 assignments to showcase various educational technology trends that support the mentees philosophy and preferred teaching style, strategies, and learning theory. When developing your coaching materials/resources include specific how-tos along with instructional strategies and activities that will support student learning and are based upon the mentee's preferred learning theory.
Creating and practice the demonstrations you will provide to the mentee on the use of each tool/media. You will submit the tool/media links and any coaching documents you create as part of the field experience deliverable.
Part 2: Coaching Your Mentee
Meet with your mentee to share your recommendations for three educational technology tools/media that can support their unit of study. Share the support resources and demonstrations you have created. Describe the research strategies you employed and discuss how you went about learning additional details and techniques specific to the use of each selected tool/media, so the mentee knows the source of the information and gains knowledge about how to conduct similar searches independently. Address any questions the mentee has about the support resources or the integration of the selected tools/media within the classroom. To better help the mentee utilize the resources in the classroom, discuss the following:
- Explain how the recommended educational technology tools/media support the learning standards and objectives and types of activities and assessments students will be completing during the unit.
- Describe how the recommended tools/media can support students who require assistive technology, modifications/accommodations, English language learners, and gifted students/early finishers.
- Review the ISTE Standards for Educators and the ISTE Standards for Students and discuss how the integration of the recommended tools/media connect with specific standards.
- Review the type of data that can be collected (if any) when utilizing each tool/media. Include discussion of data related to student engagement and assessment.
Brainstorm together about how the three recommended tools/media you demonstrated could be integrated into the unit plan to do one or more of the following:
- Creating interest as part of the anticipatory set.
- Increase student engagement.
- Provide instruction, including differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Complete student assessments, either formative, summative, or both.
- Creating project-based learning opportunities.
Use any remaining time to observe and/or assist your mentee teacher or another teacher and work with an individual or small group of students on instruction in the classroom.
In paragraphs words, summarize and reflect upon the coaching you provided to the mentee by addressing the following:
- Describe the effectiveness of the digital concept map, support resources, and demonstrations you provided for the mentee. Include discussion of one strength and one area for improvement for each and describe updates you would make to the resources and/or demonstrations prior to coaching another colleague.
- Describe how you can integrate the tenets of the Christian worldview perspective and servant leadership as a technology coach. Include discussion of how the role requires you to serve others, how service as a coach allows you to contribute to the vocation, and how the way you approach coaching with humility empowers others in ways that helps them feel a sense of value and dignity.
- Consider the verbal and non-verbal feedback you received from your mentee during the session and describe how you feel about your current ability to coach others in the use of educational technology. Include discussion of both your educational technology knowledge and coaching skills.
- Set two SMART goals, one for improving your educational technology knowledge and one for coaching skills. Explain how you think achieving these goals will benefit you and those you are coaching in future professional practice. Consider the ISTE Standards for Coaches when formulating your goals.
Submit a link to the support resources, any documentation you created for the mentee, and the reflection as one deliverable.
