Question

Researchers have been studying green anacondas (Eunectes murinus) in South America for the past two decades (see map below). Two of their study sites are the Orinoco and the Amazon Basins. Recently, they sequenced genomes of individuals from both regions and found the genomes differ by 5% (for comparison humans and chimpanzees differ by ~2%). Based on the large genetic divergence, they have named the green anacondas in the Orinoco Basin as a new species, Eunectes akayima, and this is the most recently diverged species in the entire group. The green anacondas in the Amazon Basin retain the name Eunectes murinus.
