A concerned parent writes a letter to the editor that is published in the New York Timesnot in which she argues that children these days watch too much television. She says that her children watch an average of 3.5 hours of television per day, and she thinks that this is probably representative of the population of all children in New York City. A researcher at the Columbia University reads this letter and is very skeptical of the idea that the children from this family are representative of the population of all children in NYC.
