A concerned parent writes a letter to the editor that is published in the New York Timesnot in which she argues that children these days watch too much television. She says that her children watch an average of 3.5 hours of television per day, and she thinks that this is probably representative of the population of all children in New York City. A researcher at the Columbia University reads this letter and is very skeptical of the idea that the children from this family are representative of the population of all children in NYC. She decides to conduct a study of 175 children, ages 5-15, in NYC and test whether the mean number of hours of television watched by NYC children is actually 3.5 hours. She finds in her sample that the mean number of hours watched is 2.98. Suppose that somehow the researcher knows that the standard deviation of hours watched in the population of NYC children is 2.36. Can the researcher conclude that the number of hours of television watched per day by NYC children is 3.5? (use a=.01)
