First you must read the Information Research Speech Assignment for the speech carefully (posted first weeks' module on Canvas).

Choose one topic for the Information speech from the five (5) sample topics you submitted to "5 Good Topics for an Information/Research Speech."

Read Chapter 14 on Information Speeches. You will note that the text reviews the structure of a speech, how to get to know your audience and the situation, how to select and narrow your topic, how to identify your central idea and thus main points for your speech, and also reviews writing the introduction and conclusion for your speech.

Next, go to Chapter 6 and study the logic of outlining. Here it is very important to also learn the difference between preparation and delivery outlines. At this point, you are ready to take the topic you have chosen for your Process Speech and write your outline! Please follow the guidelines in Chapter 6 exactly.

I suggest you look at the outline format in our text first and copy it. Next, qualitatively check the content of your outline so that it makes sense and reflects the explanation of why we structure an outline the way we do (so it creates a logical picture of our organization and thinking!)

When you have finished, it is time to post your outline to our assignment thread online. As before, you will first post your assignment and THEN you will be able to look at other students' work and comment. When you reply to others' work (at least two student postings) here are a few considerations:

Seek out students you have not previously "spoken" with online.

Look at the structure of the student outline - does it follow the text format?
Look to the topic itself - is the topic interesting to you and is it good fit for the PROCESSS speech assignment?

Do you have any fun recommendations as to language use or visual aid use that you may suggest?

That's it. This is an important assignment. Many of you noted in your introduction post that it is very difficult to translate your thoughts to writing and speaking. Outlines ABSOLUTELY help you clean up "fuzzy thinking!" Employing logic and structure helps us to focus on the important and clear out the information that isn't relevant and/or interesting. Further, outlining helps us group like information together so that main points contain clarifying supporting material, which is therefore easier for an audience to quickly understand and follow. Being able to prioritize and organize information is a lifetime skill that I swear will improve the quality of your life!
