Research Project for logistics management

Objectives

• Illustrate the application of warehousing and transportation concepts at the target organization(s).
• Justify choices made by organizations in logistics decisions such as transportation modes and outsourcing services
• Suggest improvements areas in logistics operations at the target company.
• Research/ visit an actual warehouse and prepare a report on what you have seen/ researched.
• Working students can visit their own company's warehouse and share data with their team members. Non-working teams can have a member arrange a visit to a warehouse, or research YouTube videos/ other sources on a selected company's warehouse operations.
• Your report should answer the following questions in light of your example:
  • Describe the warehouse: company, type, size, products, level of automation ... etc.
  • What features of this warehouse help serve its purpose?
  • Describe the flow of operations inside the warehouse. How is packaging handled in the warehouse?
  • How are/ can unit loads be applied to improve efficiency in handling products at this warehouse?
  • How does/ can automation help in the warehouse?
  • What mode of transportation is used to transport goods to/ from the warehouse? Justify this choice, or another one you see more appropriate.
  • What are/ would be the implications of international operations on transportation for this company? Include cost considerations in your analysis
  • What are the implications of reverse logistics on this warehouse's operations and on transportation? Construct a flow diagram to illustrate your answer.
  • Comment on the interrelationship within this logistics system: material handling, transportation and other functions.
  • What are some improvements you recommend in the logistics system as described in your previous answers? Refer to concepts learned in the course such as automation and technology.

Important: The project's final report, 10-12 pages. This must be a formal written report, with reference to all 10 questions. (Add one academic reference to every answer, therefore a total of 10 references are required).
