Independent Research Project -

Description - Students are required to draft a cybersecurity research paper on a topic of your choosing. Papers will consist of approximately 15-pages of original research and will include presenting their findings in class. A menu of options will be discussed in class, but students are encouraged to think creatively.

Sample Projects -

1) Pick an organization or firm that is active both in the United States and another country. Investigate how it is balancing cybersecurity regulatory requirements, and how its policies are impacted by these different regimes. Act as a cybersecurity consultant and recommend how they could do more to enhance cybersecurity within their organization, and potentially even go beyond what the law requires.

2) Analyze a particular area of public policy relating to cybersecurity. An example could be tracking the encryption debate. Investigate how public policy differs between these countries, and what impact that is having on the IT sector (such as cloud computing) of your choice.

3) Research a pending bill before the Indiana General Assembly or Congress related to cybersecurity. Prepare a report for the appropriate committee and include an op-ed to share your findings.

4) Conduct an independent research project on a topic of your choosing related to cybersecurity law and policy, thesis to be approved by instructor in advance, such as: blockchain regulation, critical infrastructure protection, implications of GDPR on U.S. firms, etc.

Explanation -

Using a US organization as an example or case study. A big organization like Facebook or amazon, and see how they are dealing with the regulations around. Topic is Implication of GDPR on U.S firms.

Things to be submitted

1. Thesis statement

Thesis statement should have; Basic statement e.g For a topic like IOT, here is a thesis statement; Given the widespread vulnerabilities, in this immerging iot ecosystems. I argue that we need to have strict liabilities to for IOT manufactures. Need a basic statement for topic; Implication of GDPR on U.S firms.

2. Research paper (15 pages)

The paper should be arguing things like

• If companies are following GDPR
• the effect of the GDPR on a US firm (choose one; a popular US firm e.g Facebook, Amazon etc)
• the approach the company is taking with the GDPR
• how the GDPR is being applied etc.
