Research Paper
Topic: A Thousand Splendid Suns
Description
1. Select one question among the list of 12 questions that appears on pages 10, 11, and 12 in the packet on A Thousand Splendid Suns in the attachment. Bring in specific examples and quotes from the novel to answer the question, and select any two literary techniques that Hosseini, the author, is using in helping you to address the question you have selected.
The list of literary techniques appears on page 9 of the packet on A Thousand Splendid Suns. Choose any two techniques; if you want to use a different technique that does not appear on that list, please let me know.
If you look at page 13, point number 3, in the packet on A Thousand Splendid Suns, you will see what I am looking for in your paper as you incorporate the two techniques into your thesis.
Remember: You are choosing one specific question from pages 10 to 12 in the packet on A Thousand Splendid Suns. Once you have done that, look at the chapters--and the specific examples you want to use--that will help you answer that question. Once you have done that, take note of the techniques that Hosseini is using in the examples you have chosen for your paper, then demonstrate how those techniques are utilized. If you have any questions or concerns about what I have described here, please let me know.
2. For the final paper, use three or four specific examples (rather than using any more) with descriptions and quotes from the novel to support your analysis. You do not have to be exhaustive and present a long list of examples; that would not be helpful, because the paper would wind up looking like a long grocery list of examples without any careful analysis. As a result, the paper would be superficial and not offer any insights.
Instead, use three or four concrete examples, the most telling examples, the best examples, in your opinion, and analyze them thoroughly so they will answer the question you have chosen. In your analysis, be careful not to give just a plot summary.
NOTE: As a quick review, consider looking at the analysis of chapter one that appears in the A Thousand Splendid Suns Review packet; it will give you a good idea of what I am looking for in your paper.
3. For the final paper, please study carefully all the guidelines that appear on pages 13 and 14 in the packet on A Thousand Splendid Suns and follow them accordingly. They are crucial, and will help you to organize your paper carefully. Furthermore, proofread your paper for spelling, for grammar, for punctuation, and for writing style. Your grade for the final paper will be based on the content, on the analysis, but also on the form of your presentation. If you have any questions about any of those guidelines, please let me know.
4. Important: For the final paper focus on Parts Three and Four of the novel. You can refer to certain key events and characters in Parts One and Two of the novel. That would be fine; you can devote a couple of sentences at most if you need to refer to something that happened in those first two parts, or to a person who was important to either Mariam or Laila. However, please do NOT let the majority of your paper be taken up with Parts One and Two. Why? Because we will have discussed those sections in class, and you want to avoid repetition. Instead, lean much more toward Parts Three and Four. Focusing too much on the first two parts of the novel will lead to a poor or failing grade. In this respect, you will need to read the entire novel to complete this assignment.
