Topic - IAS 40: Investment Property.
Introduction
A dissertation, or in this case, a mini-dissertation, is an academic document that records research conducted in a particular field of study. You may ask yourself why academic research is important. Ivankova, Creswell and Plano Clark (2015: 306) explain that ‘research, if designed and conducted rigorously, helps extends our knowledge base and ensures that our understanding of real-world issues and problems is accurate'. Research design is dependent on the purpose of a particular research project. It is important to note that research can be classified as either primary or secondary in nature. Primary research involves the design of questionnaires, surveys and interviews in a process of solving certain formulated research problems. Secondary research, on the other hand, analyses primary or secondary research previously conducted by others. For the purpose of this mini-dissertation you will be expected to conduct secondary research. Note that you will be required to consult reliable secondary sources. These include print sources, such as books and academic articles, and online sources, such as reliable websites and online journal articles. You will need to familiarise yourself with sound research methodology. The following concept map has been added for your benefit, and highlights the most important elements of the research process and the actual writing of a mini-dissertation.
