Research Methodology Assignment - Annotated Bibliography and Bibliography
Purpose of an annotated bibliography is to help the researcher capture the essence of published works in an area of research interest. In addition, the document forms a basis for knowledge classification and eventual critical review of the published literature in the research topic of interest. In the process of writing the literature review, a natural output is the identification and definition of problems pertinent to the research area. In essence the researcher is able to identify research questions and demonstrate familiarity with current solutions or results, along with the respective strengths and weaknesses. It is logical to start the research by collecting and reading publications in the general area of the topic being researched and producing an annotated bibliography as the initial output of the research endeavour. The following is a guideline on what the researcher should be looking for when reading a given publication.
1. Publication title
2. Authors
3. Year of Publication
4. The publication (i.e.where it appears - journal, conference proceedings, book, volume, issue, page numbers, etc.) Hint: use BibTeX entries.
5. What problem is being solved? Definition of the problem(s)?
6. What have others done about the problem(s)?
7. What solution is being proposed by the authors?
8. What result was obtained?
9. How does the solution/result compare/contrast with previous solutions/results? What dataset was used in the experiments?
10. What conclusion and insights were offered?
11. What further work is proposed?
12. What is the relevance of the work to your current research?
The answers to questions 5 - 11 (and others if you can come up with more) should form a strong basis for putting together a useful initial annotated bibliography. For the purpose of this assignment, you do not need to answer the question 12. A researcher should aim to read/study as many publications as possible in the area of the chosen research topic.
