Write a debate style opening statement or persuasive speech designed to be delivered in 3-5 minutes. The issue and position is for you to choose. Do make sure it is interesting, relevant, searchable, and arguable. I will ask to vet/approve topics in advance to help assure you are on track and have a topic which suits the nature of the assignment. The topic can be related to your Final Academic Paper if you wish but does not have to be so.If you are having trouble finding/choosing a topic, look on the Manitoba Speech and Debate Associate Website for a list of possible resolutions:
In preparing and writing your speech, be sure to:
• Choose a position on your issue and state the position you are taking clearly with precise wording.
• Research if there are gaps in your understanding of the topic and its related facts.
• Start strongly with a statement of the topic and your position.
• Present three or more reasoned arguments/rationales for your position. Be sure to reveal them in your introduction.
• Provide researched facts as evidence where appropriate.
• Include at least two quotes from secondary sources. Ensure that these quotes integrate fluidly into your text and are not "dropped in."
• Deliver your position in a manner that is formal, respectful, appropriate, and academic yet persuasive.
• End strongly and dramatically.
• Include a bibliography of supporting sources.
You also may wish to:
• Start with a short personal narrative that can introduce your issue's/position's central themes.
• Incorporate classical rhetorical devices such as the one which will be discussed in class. e.g. antimetabole,
• Work with a partner on the same topic in preparation but write your speeches advocating for opposite viewpoints on the topic. i.e. for/ against, in favour of/opposed to
On November 8th or 10th, you will be presenting your written speech. Even though it is a written speech which will be read, it should be delivered as a debate opening statement or persuasive speech is intended to be delivered. Use your words and your voice persuasively and dramatically
