Facial recognition software has helped in identifying possible suspects. Today, when someone is identified using facial recognition software, other methods must be used to make sure it is the right person. A problem with unidentified suspects (unsubs) is that it has been hard to identify people using just a photo. New developments in facial recognition software takes measurements of a person's face and matches it to existing photos to help identify unsubs or unknown people caught on camera.
1. Research facial recognition software, how reliable it is, and whether it can be used in court to identify an unknown person as the person guilty of a crime.
2. Share with your classmates what you have learned about facial recognition software and how it is used in court.
3. In addition to your general discussion on facial recognition software, please answer the following questions:
- Do experts in the field think facial recognition is a good way to identify unsubs or unknown people caught on camera?
- Do most courts depend or allow facial recognition software as evidence in court?
- In the past, how have courts gotten comfortable enough with new technology and allowed it in as evidence?
- What are the problems that will keep facial recognition software from being used in court?
- Do you think that facial recognition software will ever become as common as fingerprint analysis, fiber analysis, or DNA analysis? Why or why not?
