Many philanthropic foundations in this country were established by entrepreneurs (i.e. The Lilly Family, Andrew Carnegie, Warren Buffett, Mario Batali, Michael Bloomberg, Tony Hawk, and Oprah Winfrey). According to Salazar (2011), major private foundations have for many years supported charitable causes at home but their philanthropy is increasingly crossing borders, with the developing world receiving a larger share of total giving. Research at least four prominent entrepreneurs that are philanthropic and discuss common threads among them that may have contributed to their generosity.
