The Institute of Medicine (2011) and Benner et al (2010) have called for a radical change in the way nurses should be educated and their scope of practice. These changes also support the BSN as the entry level into practice with a push towards MSN prepared nurses managing and coordinating patient care in acute care and community-based settings. Nurse educators are at the forefront of developing currciula that address both the theoretical knowledge and technical skills to prepare nurses to practice within the current and future healthcare environment. Review the IOM paper on nursing education and obtain a peer reviewed research article supporting Benner's work.
