PART A
TASK 1: RESEARCH AND POWERPOINT
Stage 1: Collaboration in Groups
1. CHOOSING A HEALTH DILEMMA TOPIC (Choose ONE topic per group)
In your group, choose one significant health dilemma in NZ, provided from the list below (you are not limited to these choices but check with your lecturer):
Our topic is Depression in New Zealand.
• Mental health (You will need to choose a specific area within Mental health)
• Homelessness
• Housing shortage
• Asthma
• Poverty
• Heart disease
• Smoking
• SIDS
• Obesity
• Rheumatic fever
• Sleep
• Vaccines (Choose a specific vaccine that is noteworthy in NZ)
• Rheumatic fever
• Conventional health care
• Unconventional health care
• Cancer in NZ (You must choose a specific cancer and one that is significant in NZ)
• Foetal alcohol syndrome
2. PRELIMINARY RESEARCH re: CHOSEN HEALTH DILEMMA TOPIC
After choosing your health dilemma topic, your group will conduct PRELIMINARY RESEARCH:
•
o As a GROUP, brainstorm some ideas about your topic and discuss these in your group. (5 mins)
o As a GROUP, develop 4-5 general questions about your topic based on your discussions. (15 mins)
o INDIVIDUALLY, each group member will choose one of the questions to research and gather information. (20 mins)
o As a GROUP, discuss your findings from your research. This will help you formulate your KEY QUESTIONS.
o As a GROUP, develop 3 KEY QUESTIONS your group have about your topic.
•
- Do not use the questions that are in the Context/Impact portion of this assessment.
- Avoid questions such as: "What is Dengue Fever?" "How can we learn more about Dengue Fever?"
- Use these 3 key questions to FORMULATE your groups' RESEARCH AIM for the Model Presentation.
3. RESEARCH
Your research should provide you with enough information to present 4 minutes of quality content.
Carry out your planned research using RELEVANT and RELIABLE sources such as journal articles and government websites. See the modules for choosing credible sources.
During your research, your group should be looking for information that will give CONTEXT or background information about your health dilemma topic. Your group will also need to research the IMPACT of the health dilemma on a person's wellbeing.
CONTEXT
If you are in a Group of four: assign two or three group members to cover this section. You MUST cover all points.
If you are in a Group of three: assign two group members to cover this section. You MUST cover all points.
If you are in a Group of two: both group members should present a portion of this section each. You do not need to cover everything in the context but you MUST cover points ii and iii.
Develop the following points so you can provide some CONTEXT for your health dilemma during your presentation:
I. Research your health dilemma to be able to provide an overview to the audience. (Find images and key words to help give your audience some context about your chosen health dilemma).
II. Research and find out why your topic is a significant health dilemma in NZ.
III. Research who is mainly affected by the health dilemma. This is the statistics/demographic section. Some factors to consider are: age, gender, socio-economic, location, ethnicity. You should find graphs, tables or stats to use in your PowerPoint to support your research. You should be able elaborate on these graphs during your presentation.
IV. Question :Research the resources and/or programmes, organisations and/or relevant laws that are available to address this health dilemma. Include at least three organisations/programmes in your PowerPoint. Ensure to elaborate on these during your presentation. Consider including this information as your last slide in your PowerPoint and presentation. Need 2 slides on this and need to give 3 organizations that are working on depression and treatment they provide. Sources should be from government website of New Zealand or journal articles and newspaper or relevant original website. So basically need to do research on resources which provide help with depression all shoulde from only New Zealand websites.
IMPACT
If you are in a Group of four: assign two group members to cover this section (preferably NOT the person researching point III in the context).
If you are in a Group of three: assign two group members to cover this section (preferably NOT the person researching point III in the context).
If you are in a Group of two: both group members should present a portion of this section each.
Choose at least two of the points below and research the impact your chosen health dilemma has on a person's wellbeing. Your group does not have to cover all of these impacts. Choose two only.
1. Only choose one impact from below except point 6 as already taken by other group member.
1. psychological
2. physical
3. spiritual
4. family
5. impact on a body system(s)
6. disease or disorder (This could be used as the introductory slide for your research)
7. financial
RESEARCH AIM
Assign someone in your group to research and present the answer to the research aim. Decide as a team where that information will slot in effectively. It could be in one of the context topics or in the impact section. It's up to your group to decide but someone needs to answer the research aim.
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
An annotated bibliography is sometimes given as an assessment task at the beginning of a research project to encourage you to survey and reflect on what has already been discovered about your topic. However, it might also be given as a stand-alone assignment to develop your research and critical thinking skills.
Remember, what you include in your annotated bibliography depends on what your lecturer is asking you to do. So, follow the instructions. Check the template in the modules for more information.
INSTRUCTIONS
Each group member will write up an annotated bibliography for one of their selected journal article readings from a relevant and reliable source. Instructions are below. You will use APA 7th format throughout this assessment (100-150 words).
1. Each student must choose one of their Journal articles from their research.
2. When you select a journal article to read, focus on your topic. Look for information in the article that is relevant to your research question.
1. Structure for the Annotated Bibliography
There are 2 parts:
Annotated Bibliography = Part I REFERENCE (APA) + Part II ANNOTATION
Part I: Reference your Journal Article in APA 7th Format
Part II: Annotation (100-150 words in ONE PARAGRAPH)
1. Provide some background information on the authors. (1-2 sentences only. Use general information here. If they all work at Universities and carry out research in their respective organisations, then state that. You don't have to name every author and every university).
2. For whom was this article written for? Who is the intended audience? Who will benefit from the research in your journal article? (1-2 sentences)
3. Identify two main ideas in the journal article that help to clarify your research. Link these to the question or idea you are attempting to answer. (3-4 sentences)
Stage 2: Developing your PowerPoint - (12 Slides maximum) Avoid using large portions of text copied from sources.
1. YOUR POWERPOINT MUST INCLUDE ALL OF THESE:
1.
1.
A. Title page.
B. The 3 key questions which led to your aim. I need 1 key question related to my paragraph.
C. Your groups' research aim.
D. Your group's individual Annotated Bibliographies (fit 2 annotated bibs per slide: 2 slides max).
E. Background information (context) for your issue (max. 3 slides).
F. The impact your chosen health dilemma has on a person's wellbeing (max. 3 slides).
G. Include images and key words only in your slides. You will expand on this information during your presentation. There is a limit of text that you can use for each slide:
1.
7 lines of text per slide
7 words per line
H. Your CONTEXT and IMPACT slides should have sources cited. You should have at least 2-3 relevant and reliable sources in each of your slides (this may include your journal article you used for your annotated bib).
I. Include additional information in the NOTES section of the PowerPoint to help you elaborate on your slides during the presentation. Marks are awarded for your notes section.
J. Include ONE REFERENCE LIST for the whole group, using APA formatting
2. INSTRUCTIONS for developing your slides
3. Decide as a group where you will develop your PowerPoint. Everyone must be able to access the PowerPoint to work on their own slides.
4. Each group member is responsible for their OWN research and for developing their OWN slides. Completing someone else's slide is misconduct in assessment. Make sure you work on your own slides for the PowerPoint.
5. Include your name on the bottom right hand corner of your CONTEXT and/or IMPACT slides.
6. If a group member does not engage during the assessment and they have not requested an extension, you may leave their name off the PowerPoint or they may be removed from your group, if you can show evidence that you have tried to contact them throughout the research process. This will not affect your group marks and you do not have to present their research portion.
7. If the group member returns and wishes to join the group, the decision will be a group decision. If the group decides against including the group member, the student will join another group.
3. SUBMISSION OF YOUR POWERPOINT
Only ONE person from your group needs to submit on behalf of the whole group.
• Ensure you have checked that your work meets the requirements before submitting.
• Ensure everyone has submitted their annotated bibliography and it meets the requirements.
• Ensure everyone has added notes to support their research in their slides.
• Ensure everyone meets the: 7 lines of text per slide & 7 words per line format for the slides.
• Ensure everyone has used appropriate APA formatting in their slides and notes section of the PowerPoint.
• Ensure everyone has enough information to present 4 MINUTES of QUALITY
• Submissions will only be marked through Canvas. Do not email your submissions; these will not be marked. You will be awarded a resit if you do not submit on time.
• Submit your work on time. Check the assessment planner and the assessment for the due dates. If you miss the submission deadline, this will result in a Resit mark.
Use this PowerPoint template to develop your slides.
