Scenario

You have completed your HND in Hospitality Management and you are trying to seek employment in the hotel industry, in particular in the Human Resource Department. You have decided to research Human Resource Management (HRM) in more detail to assist you in interviews and applications.

The list below shows some of the famous chains of hotels worldwide. As part of your study you should select one of them to research and investigate.

  • If you are currently working in a hotel you may select your own organisation.
  • Hilton Hotels
  • Sheraton Hotels and Resorts
  • Meridian Hotels
  • Holiday Inn

Task 1 
• 1.1. From the selected chain of hotel above,produce a written report analysing the role and purpose of human resource management.

1.2 for your chosen hotel, analyse supply and demand. Based on your analysis devise a report to produce and justify a plan on supply and demand, which considers; internal and external factors influencing human resource planning and human resource planning in a changing environment
You must include a slide showing references you have used to support your research and findings. Please use adequate notes in the notes section.

Task 2
• 2.1 For your chosen organisation produce a written report to assess the current state of employment relations in your hotel chain. Estimate the quality and evaluate the way HRM works in your chosen hotel. You should consider; unionisation eg structure, culture, collective bargaining, negotiation,consultation; employee participation, involvement and conflict management, empowerment;grievance procedures, disciplinary procedures

• 2.2 For your selected organisation, include in the report a discussion on how employment law affect HRM. You may consider; employment legislation eg Employment Relations Act, Employment Rights Act; equal opportunities; contracts of employment, including termination age resignations,redundancy procedure, ill health retirements, retirement, dismissal, maternity and paternityrights, parental leave; tribunals, Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). The legislation you use should be relevant to the UK.

Task 3
• 3.1 Research at least one job description and a person specification for your chosen organisation. For your selected organisation prepare a job description and person specification You should discuss the role, responsibilities, what is required (skills, qualities, experience, qualifications).

• 3.2 Produce a typed document to compare the selection process of your chosen organisation with an organisation from a different service industry. E.g. you may compare your chosen hotel with an organisation from the restaurant industry. Your comparison should be a detailed explanation of the similarities and differences and not merely two lists.

You may wish to consider; selection methods and practices, barriers to effective selection, evaluating recruitment and selection processes, application form design, applicant information packs, shortlisting, interview methods and interviewing skills

Task 4

• 4.1 For your selected organisation assess what the contribution of training and development activities to the effective operation of the business. A detailed explanation into the methods used to address training and development needs. Evaluate how the use of training and development can affect the overall objectives of the organisation. Explain how and why it is affected.

You should consider; effects eg link between induction programmes and training, the role and need for training, training versus development debate, types of training and development activities, training needs analysis, use of appraisals and target setting, benefits of training and development, barriers and attitudes to training, competency-based training and the evaluation of training against overall organisational objectives
