Assignment:
Individual Report
Task: There are two parts to this assignment. Research your chosen profession's requirements to advance in that field, and summarize a related business case that demonstrates an ethical concern or violation and report the long and short term impact of this occurrence on both the profession and the company involved.
Explanation: Because success in any industry relies a great deal on your understanding of the field, you will be conducting up-to-date research about your industry to determine what it takes to succeed. You should look up statistics to see what requirements exist in order for an individual to not only start but also thrive in the field. Don't just look at degrees (though, you can mention that); look at what kind of knowledge you need. Be specific. For example, a doctor needs to know science, but what kind of scientific innovations should a doctor be up-to-date with?
Then, to demonstrate your case analysis skills, you'll research a business that failed in some way ethically. You can discuss a legal violation or something a bit more ambiguously unethical, such as an instance in which public opinion changed because of a business decision that was seen as legal but unethical. Explain what you think the problem they faced was (hint: it has to do with ethics), analyze why it's a problem and why it's hindering the firm from achieving its goals, and, instead of alternatives and a recommendation, you are just going to explain what the outcomes of both the business and the industry were. Did the firm have to close? Did the industry push for new laws in order to prevent such issues again?
