Requires knowledge of Data Visualization: With the explosion of the availability and correlation of data, new tools have emerged in an attempt to keep pace. Manual calculation by pen and paper were the visualization tools of the late '70s, which would be inadequate for the assimilation and presentation of today's proliferation of data. In this assignment, students will look at modern and historic methods of data visualization and the impact of those visualizations.
Write two to three paragraphs contrasting historic versus modern methods of data visualization and answering the following questions:
Is visualization more or less important today than it was 20 to 30 years ago? Why?
These days, many people use portable display devices, such as mobile phones and tablets. What changes might occur in the future as a result? What data visualization strategies might you pursue for mobile devices?
Include the following critical elements:
a) Historic vs. Modern Visualization Methods: Explain how historic methods of data visualization were different from today's methods. What tools were used? What were the limitations? What can you do with some of the new tools that was not previously possible?
b) Importance of Visualization Methods: Explain why you believe that visualizations are more or less important today than several decades ago.
c) Future Trends: Extrapolate from past trends to identify two to three possible future trends in data visualization, especially pertaining to portable display devices.
d) Strategies for Mobile Devices: Strategize how you can take advantage of mobile devices when using data visualization techniques. What changes would you make for use on mobile devices?
