Question: Minoritarian theater makers and activists have used performance and representation to try to make political change-- it is very common for activists and theater makers (and activist theater makers) to claim that truth, accuracy, or authenticity are the tools necessary to combat injustice or oppression. But what does truth, accuracy, or authenticity mean when we're dealing with fiction, fantasy, and make believe? In the world of theater, we have already agreed that one person (an actor) may stand in for another totally different person (a character). We agree that fantasy, imagination, and fun are also important aspects of theater and performance--like Qui Nguyen's superhero and comic book style plays, Hamilton's cross-race casting and hip hop style, or the drag ball categories of Paris is Burning. Use cultural appropriation to explain an argument against realism or "authenticity" as a requirement for minoritarian performance. What are we really arguing for when we talk about the "realistic," authentic or true in artistic representation?
