During a first meeting with Janna, a 15-year-old female, she reports increasing arguments with her parents about her school performance (undesirable according to her parents), new friends that she has been "hanging out with," and a recent breakup with her boyfriend. Janna denied a history of suicide attempt or self-harm; however, she relates that she has begun having thoughts about killing herself over the past month. She has had these thoughts a few times a week, usually after an argument with her parents. When questioned about a plan, Janna indicated that she has thought about taking the bottle of pills from her mother's purse that her mother takes for anxiety and swallowing as many pills as she can at one time. She has not disclosed her suicidal thoughts to anyone, including her parents or primary care provider. Janna denies the use of alcohol, cannabis, or street drugs.
