Assignment
It is important that your report is addressed to your client
You should think about why economics is relevant to your client and to those that they represent, i.e. their members
You can refer to specific examples, topics or issues; you can be broad in your approach; you can be both specific and broad
You are not simply defining concepts - this is an applied report, tailored to your client and their members to evidence the relevance, the importance and the significance of economic ideas
The narrative is very important
It should be jargon-free- this does not mean treating your client as stupid!
It needs to be engaging and yet needs to develop a logical, coherent and robust argument
It should incorporate real-world applications, cases and examples
Your narrative should flow - avoid it reading like a list of concepts (a ‘shopping list')
Your report should include THREE of the following concepts, with at least ONE from list A or list B
List A (Micro):
Opportunity and sunk costs
Price discrimination
Perfect competition
List B (Macro):
The macroeconomic environment
The business cycle
Household consumption (consumer spending)
You can, of course refer to other economic concepts, theories and principles - just ensure that you have sufficiently explained, explored and applied your three chosen concepts
Your client could be real or fictitious - you have considerable discretion, which gives you flexibility and allows you to be creative
Your client is an organization/trade body/interest group representing:
The business community, e.g. the UK's Confederation of British Industry or Federation of Small Businesses or Local Enterprise Partnerships
Specific industrial sectors, e.g. UK Finance (Banking and Finance), British Retail Consortium
(Retail), Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (Automotive)
Third sector: not-for-profit organisations, charities, cooperatives and social enterprises, e.g.
Social Enterprise UK, Fairtrade Foundation, Greenpeace UK
Your narrative should flow - avoid it reading like a list of concepts (a ‘shopping list')
Your report should contain an executive summary before the main report and a reference section at the end (British Harvard Style)
The main body of the report should be up to 1,200 words (excluding references within the main body)
