Statistic Assignment -

Please complete the following task. You should aim to analyse and present the statistics in ways that follow standard conventions (such as APA) seen in journal papers.

Task 1 - A researcher wanted to assess the claim by a software company that children who learnt science using their Personal Inquiry Simulation (PIS) will learn more than children taught using traditional classroom instruction. The researcher collects pre and post test scores at the beginning and end of semester on a science inquiry test on 120 (from four classes of 30) 16 year olds who had been randomly assigned to either traditional instructional or PIS. Your task will be to create a document that includes:

  • relevant descriptive statistics (including visualizations if desired)
  • a description of assumptions that were to tested in order to justify particular inferential tests
  • presentation of any inferential test(s) conducted
  • a report of the results of inferential test using standard conventions
  • interpretation of your finding
  • discussion of the implications and limitations of the study, including your statistical choices is relevant,
  • a conclusion of whether there is sufficient evidence to support the use of PIS to teaching science inquiry.

The data can be found in the excel spreadsheet called PIS on the moodle site.

General Notes.

It is possible to analyse both tasks in excel though you may need to check that you have the right statistical tools included. If you find you cannot run statistics you should check you have the Analysis ToolPaK add on included (see Excel support). If you are familiar with statistical packages such as mini tab or SPSS you are of course welcome to use them instead as more options are available. Note however, you should not take the outputs from SPSS etc and simply include them as they do not follow standard reporting conventions. There is no word limit on this assignment and longer does not necessarily mean better. Well selected tests, clear justification and more appropriate presentation of the data and stats means better!
