Chapter 3 - The "soundscape" of our world is constantly changing as old sounds disappear and are replaced by new ones. Identify different sounds that you hear on a daily basis. What is the loudest sound you hear? The most annoying? The rarest? The highest? The most beautiful?

Chapter 4 - Compare the religious and secular music of the Middle Ages. How are they similar and how do they differ?

What distinguishes music from other sounds that we hear? Can you think of a definition of music that is better than the one in this book?

Listen to a piece of non-western music (e.g. Australia, Korea, Japan) that is discussed in Chapter 1. After listening several times discuss the history of the piece of music, instrumentation, and the musical elements (melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, etc.) that you hear. Please post the listening source (i.e. Youtube) so others may listen and responded intelligently to the piece of music you chose.
