Question

Western culture seems unique in that we seem to force religion into the arena of epistemology. these kind of proofs, arguments and refutations seem to appear more in Christian, Judaic and Islamic theology than anywhere else. it seems more natural to compartmentalize being a scientist and being a Buddhist or Shinto. It is also more possible to be both a Buddhist and Shinto. By contrast, we are constantly in conflict over science and religion, and the idea of being any two of the three Abrahamic religions, at once, is nearly unthinkable. It is also the case that there have been more war and oppression attached to these three systems of belief than all of the other world religions combined. A war in the name of Jesus should be just as absurd as a war in the name of the Buddha, and yet only the later is historically rare. What is it about these religions that causes us to seek proof? Is it the religions or is it our cultural assumptions and tendencies? What do you think?
