A growing number of black people argue that they are no longer relevant since black consumers prefer to spend their money on big name brands rather than investing in independent black/brown companies. Others argue that encouraging black consumers to segregate themselves through the economy simply alienates them further. Still, many people argue that emphasizing the importance of black consumer dollars in and outside of black communities is the only way to reinforce black social and political equality.
