Each one has been refined over the decades to hear fundamental cases established by the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Constitution. Whether criminal or civil, each court maintains general, original, and appellate jurisdiction. The relationship between federal and state courts is complex, yet the interaction is fluid in nature.
