Assignment: Federalist #52 claims that "it is essential to liberty that the government, in general, should have a common interest with the people" (Federalist #52). This means that "frequent elections are unquestionably the only policy by which this dependence and sympathy can be effectually secured" (Ibid.). Therefore, to fulfill this obligation for frequent elections, America conducts general elections every 2 years. On November 8th, 2022 we had such an election. Further, voting is considered the most basic form of civic and political engagement. Typically, roughly 40%-60% of the electorate participates in the type of general election conducted on November 8th: Mid-term General Election. This paper asks you to reflect on and communicate your civic engagement in response to the following questions.
Question 1: Did you vote in the November 8th election? Why or why not? If you voted in the election, what were the motivating factors in your participation? For example, a sense of civic duty? The coronavirus pandemic? Peer-pressure? Desire to vote for a particular candidate? A specific policy issue? Any current events? If you did not vote in the election, explain why you did not. Were you not eligible (perhaps because of age)? Apathetic towards the candidates? Unaware there was an election? Unable because of work or other commitments? We don't need to know WHO you voted for, but rather are interested in WHY you did or did not vote. If you don't feel comfortable saying who you voted for, that is fine. Simply explain why (or why not) you voted.
Question 2: Did you engage in any conversations with your friends, family, fellow students, co-workers or professors (or anyone else) about the election? How did their perspectives shape your own? Did you learn anything new from these conversations? Did these conversations make you reconsider ideas that you previously held without questioning?
Question 3: Regardless of whether you voted, choose 1 policy or issue discussed in class that was, or could be, a motivating factor for you to vote. Discuss this policy or issue. Why is it a concern to you? For example, is there a particular policy issue area? Concerns over the US Constitution? The proper relationship between the states and the Federal government? Your answer to this question MUST include credible and relevant sources to support your claim.
